The thought of having a tooth removed can cause anxiety for many people. You might worry about the procedure itself or the recovery process. With modern techniques and a focus on patient care, we ensure you are relaxed and informed every step of the way.
A smooth recovery is just as important as a smooth procedure. Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions is the key to healing quickly and without complications. This guide will walk you through what to expect and how to properly care for yourself after a tooth extraction.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Your permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but there are several reasons why a tooth extraction might be necessary. A dentist will always try to save a natural tooth first, but sometimes removal is the best option for your overall oral health.
Common reasons for extraction include:
- Severe Decay: If a tooth is so damaged by a cavity that it cannot be restored with a filling or crown, extraction may be needed to prevent the infection from spreading.
- Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often don’t have enough room to grow in properly. They can become impacted, growing in at an angle and causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.
- Crowding: Sometimes, a dentist will recommend removing teeth to prepare for orthodontic treatment. This creates the necessary space for your other teeth to move into proper alignment.
- Infection or Risk of Infection: If an infection in a tooth is severe and antibiotics aren’t effective, an extraction might be necessary to resolve the issue. This is also a consideration for patients with compromised immune systems.
- Advanced Gum Disease: Periodontal disease can loosen teeth. In advanced stages, an extraction may be the only way to treat the affected area.
A Painless and Comfortable Procedure
At our East El Paso office, your comfort is our top priority. We use effective local anesthesia to completely numb the area around the tooth, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure, but you will not feel sharpness or pain. For patients who experience significant anxiety, we can discuss sedation options to help you relax.
Our experienced dental team uses gentle techniques to remove the tooth efficiently, minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues. We will talk you through the process and ensure you feel secure from start to finish.
Your Guide to a Smooth Recovery
Proper care after your surgery is crucial for healing. Following these instructions will help you prevent complications like dry socket and infection, reduce discomfort, and get back to your routine as quickly as possible.
General Postoperative Care
For the first couple of days, it’s important to allow your body to form a stable blood clot in the empty tooth socket. This clot is the foundation of the healing process.
- DO NOT smoke or use smokeless tobacco for at least 48 hours. The chemicals and suction can dislodge the blood clot.
- DO NOT consume alcohol for at least 48 hours. Alcohol can interfere with healing and medications.
- AVOID spitting, rinsing forcefully, swishing, or sucking through a straw for at least 24 hours. These actions can dislodge the protective blood clot.
Operative Site Care
Managing the surgical site correctly will control bleeding and swelling.
- Bite firmly on the gauze pack placed over the surgical site for 30 minutes after your procedure.
- If bleeding persists after 30 minutes, replace the gauze with a new piece and continue to apply firm pressure. Consistent pressure is more effective than changing the gauze frequently.
- Slight bleeding or oozing is normal for the first day or two. You may want to use an old pillowcase or place a towel on your pillow to protect it.
- On the day of surgery, you can place ice packs on the side of your face over the extraction site (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to help reduce swelling.
- Normal swelling typically peaks within 48-72 hours after surgery and will then begin to subside.
Activity Levels
Rest is a vital part of your recovery.
- Go directly home after your surgery and rest. Avoid taking stairs by yourself on the first day.
- DO NOT engage in any sports, aerobics, or heavy lifting for at least 3 days to avoid elevating your blood pressure, which can increase bleeding at the extraction site.
Medications
Follow all medication instructions precisely to manage pain and prevent infection.
- Take all medications as directed by your doctor. If you are prescribed antibiotics, be sure to take them to completion, even if you feel better.
- USE CAUTION: Do not drive or operate machinery while taking prescribed pain medication, as it can cause drowsiness.
- You may be given a prescribed mouth rinse. Begin using it as directed, typically starting 24 hours after your surgery.
Recommended Diet
Eating the right foods will prevent irritation to the surgical site and provide the nutrients your body needs to heal.
- A soft diet is recommended for the first 24-48 hours. This includes foods like pasta, mashed potatoes, soup, scrambled eggs, yogurt, pudding, and seedless smoothies.
- Drink plenty of fluids, but remember not to use a straw.
- AVOID the following foods for the first week: straws, fruits with seeds, popcorn, chips, nuts, acidic foods (like oranges and tomatoes), and carbonated drinks. These can irritate the wound or get stuck in the socket.
When to Contact Us
While some discomfort is normal, certain symptoms require immediate attention. Please report the following to your doctor immediately:
- Temperature greater than 101.5°F
- Increasing pain that does not improve with medications
- Bleeding and/or swelling that is beyond what your doctor told you to expect
